International Women’s Day – On International Women’s Day, we celebrated the strength, resilience, and transformative power of women. We also recognize the ongoing challenges that women face around the world, particularly in vulnerable communities. In Uganda, our organization is dedicated to empowering women, breaking down barriers, and building communities of hope.
In many Ugandan societies, women continue to hold a secondary status compared to men. This disparity leads to increased vulnerability, particularly in impoverished areas like slums. Cultural and religious norms, coupled with financial constraints, often limit girls’ access to education, leading to early marriages, unwanted pregnancies, and increased rates of HIV/AIDS. This cycle of disadvantage perpetuates poverty and limits women’s potential.
Understanding these challenges, we launched the Milele School of Community in April 2021. This program is designed to equip women with practical skills and knowledge, transforming them from “bread earners” into “bread makers” within their communities. The first group of women graduated in January 2022, marking a significant milestone in our women empowerment journey.
Our curriculum focuses on providing hands-on skills such as tailoring, hairdressing, baking and yet to add more programs . We also prioritize essential life skills, including communication, marketing, marital education, leadership, and financial literacy. Recognizing the importance of inclusivity, and after requests from the community, we have also expanded the program to include men and young adults.
Despite globalization, many Ugandan societies still consider women the “weaker gender.” This perception stems from cultural and religious beliefs, as well as the lack of consistent educational opportunities for girls. Financial constraints and teenage pregnancies often force girls to drop out of school, leaving marriage as their primary option. This results in a cycle of early marriages, unwanted pregnancies, and poverty. On International Women’s Day, it’s crucial to acknowledge these systemic issues and actively work towards dismantling them. Our community workshops and training programs are designed to break this cycle and empower women to take control of their lives.
The impact of our programs is evident in the lives of the women we serve. Teenage mothers, widows, and single mothers have found purpose and direction through our six-month training programs. They have gained a sense of identity, started careers, and established small businesses, enabling them to support their families and contribute to their communities.
Our commitment to empowering women extends beyond the classroom. Through the Milele Neighborhood initiative, we partner with Milele School of Community alumni to form small groups that share knowledge and build savings schemes. Women who have received sewing machines teach others, fostering a culture of mutual support and empowerment.
We believe that healthy communities raise healthy children, and we strive to create lasting change by involving local people in our projects. By investing in women, we are investing in the future of Uganda.
We invite you to join us in empowering vulnerable women in Uganda. A monthly sponsorship can provide a woman with the tools and resources she needs to transform her life and her community.
By supporting our programs, you are helping to break the cycle of poverty and create a brighter future for women in Uganda. You are helping to build communities of hope, where women are empowered to lead and thrive.
We are committed to building self-reliant communities and creating a network of women who can lead the transformation of their communities. Together, we can make a lasting impact.
